Scented Visions

Penhaligon’s is delighted to be working with Scented Visions this month. Scented Visions is a new innovative concept which is designed to guide you through the upcoming Pre-Raphaelite exhibition at the Tate Britain, by the sense of smell. The exhibition opens  on the 12th of September and will illustrate how the Pre-Raphaelites constitute Britain’s first modern art movement.

Hosted by art historian Christina Bradstreet and Odette Toilette, the multi sensory tour is a unique opportunity to explore the historical associations of scent and its influence upon the interpretation of the paintings. Clever huh?

We don’t want to give away too much but we can reveal that Penhaligon’s will be making an appearance at some point!  Odette Toilette says of our inclusion within the multi sensory tour; ‘With the Pre-Raphaelite exhibition having the strapline of -Victorian Avant Garde – and a celebration of 19th century British art, we’re obviously very pleased to be incorporating Penhaligons and as much in the way of English perfumery as possible.’

Book your tickets for this multi sensory adventure before they all go!

The Alex Monroe Peoneve Collection

We are delighted to reveal that British Jewellery designer Alex Monroe  has created two exclusive pieces of jewellery to coincide with the launch of our latest fragrance Peoneve.

The Peony has another fan in Alex Monroe, who has cleverly captured the delicate, fluffy Peony flower in all its glory in this limited edition collection which will be available exclusively in a selection of Penhaligon’s UK boutiques.

Alex Monroe recently spoke about this exciting collaboration: “Peonies have always been a favourite of mine but I’ve found them impossible to make. Too many petals! So when Penhaligons asked me to come up with something based on the peony I was rather nervous, but it was a challenge I rather relished… I haven’t been beaten yet! It took three or four attempts to get it right. I’m very pleased with the result. Phew!”

This isn’t the first time that we have  worked with Alex Monroe;  back in 2009 Alex created a limited edition collection for the launch of Amaranthine.

Which other fragrances would you like to see Alex Monroe create some bespoke jewellery for?

Heavenly Scented Tea

In Edinburgh, just off George Street, at No 41 Frederick Street is the quirky and busy little tea boutique, eteaket. Fiercely passionate about all things tea, the quietly spoken director and founder, Erica Moore and her devoted team are taking on the coffee shops and providing welcome and refreshing relief from the often repetitive world of lattes, cappuccinos and mocca-lacca-frotha-hoo-ha.  In a previous life Erica Moore was a litigation lawyer who decided life would be much more rewarding travelling the world tasting and gathering tea leaves. She has been tasting tea since 2006 and travels mainly to China, India and Sri Lanka in her search for eteaket’s array of wonderful brews.

Eteaket opened its doors in December 2008 and aims to rekindle our love affair with tea, drawing our attention to the many glorious varieties of the camellia sinensis plant. Black teas, white teas, herbals, red teas, fruits teas and boutique blends; each tea is a revelation, reminding us how much we take the humble tea leaf for granted.  Tea was once smuggled into the country and locked away from the servants, it was that precious. Teahouses were places of intrigue and sedition, gossip and fragile gentility. Drinking your chosen blend in eteaket feels special and miles away from the standard coffee house scene. Served in china cups and with little timers to tell you when to remove the leaves, everything delights the eyes, the palate and to a perfume obsessive like myself, the nose. The air is filled with the wonderful aromas of various teas, a mélange of smoky sweetness and the green grassiness of steeped unfurled tea leaves.

We are a nation of tea drinkers apparently. So at the Edinburgh Penhaligon’s boutique, we decided to talk to Erica and her team about creating a bespoke blend for us to sell in store as we launched our beautiful new solar floral Peoneve, created for us by Master Perfumer, Olivier Cresp. This warm earthy marriage of rose and peony is sensual and gloriously eccentric, with heady violet and vetiver notes. A shot of Hedione cloaks the scent in silver, giving the fragrance the impression of petals catching the sun’s rays.

For the last couple of years I have worked with Ali Gower and his team at the Chocolate Tree in Bruntsfield to create luxury chocolates inspired by our fragrances, but tea was something very new to me. I spent an aromatic couple of hours with Erica, sampling different teas, learning the (very….) basics of tea making, leaves, picking, rolling, brewing, harvesting etc.  I talked Erica through Peoneve after spending time with her in store, Fragrance Profiling her, so she could experience how Penhaligon’s talks and feels about fragrance. She chose the sensual tropical floriental Amaranthine, one of our most original and beautiful perfumes, created for us in 2009 by Bertrand Duchaufour.

I have three favourite blends from their range……Chocolate Abyss – black tea blended with real chocolate pieces, cocoa nibs and coconut flakes. Yellow Gold Oolong – hand rolled leaves creating a soft creamy brew with grassy vetiver like notes. My favourite is the incredible Jasmine Pearls, green tea leaves, hand-scented six times and rolled into beautiful tight little grassy balls. When it’s brewed, the liquor is intensely fragrant with buttery, tobacco notes and a delicate smokiness that floats across the cup as you sip.

The final version of the blend Erica produced for our boutique was remarkable. It was important of course that the tea reflected the components of Peoneve as closely as possible. But I was blown away by what arrived on my desk one day. I slowly opened the bag to savour the contents.  The look of the tea was important too and the little shards of rose, peony and sunflower scattered throughout the White Peony leaves looked very pretty. I loved the addition of Champagne Jasmine flowers and petit rose buds; they added the most divine aroma as the tea brewed. The mingling of perfume and tea worked beyond my expectations. As I sipped my rose-tinted elixir, I closed my eyes and listened to the sound of the city traffic fade away. I imagined myself in a garden, stretched out in the sun, insects buzzing in the air, a single plane tracing lazy vapour trails in sky.  A hazy British summer, blended leaf tea and fine British fragrance, a unique perfumed marriage.

I am thrilled by the results of this collaboration.  The Peoneve White Peony Tea Blend is exclusive to the Edinburgh Penhaligon’s boutique and eteaket and will retail at £3.95. So treat yourself or a friend to something special, a fragrant and atmospheric floral white tea inspired by a perfume from one of Britain’s most beautiful and revered fragrance houses.

Liquid Emotion by Guest Blogger Jessica from The Beauty Room

Last week, beauty blogger Jessica of The Beauty Room had a fragrance profile at our Covent Garden boutique. Today she shares her experience with us…

Being invited along to have a fragrance profile at Penhaligon’s has got to be one of my most treasured experiences I’ve had.

On a wet and dreary Friday afternoon I didn’t know what to expect, but was instantly filled with excitement as I stepped into the beautifully decorated and ever so special profiling room at the back of the Covent Garden boutique store. As soon as I arrived fragrance expert Richard warmly greeted me and sat me down on the lovely chaise lounge whilst I took in the pretty surroundings. I was truly spoilt with delicious wine, macaroons and then topped off with afternoon tea presented in the quaintest vintage tea set that actually belonged to Richard’s grandmother!

I knew I was in for a treat when Richard passionately started explaining how the fragrance profiling works, and I was soon to learn for myself how the luxurious and totally unique session explores your personality through Penhaligon’s delicious array of perfumes, revealing the fragrance that suits you perfectly. The profiling unravels and sparks memories, loves, likes and dislikes whilst learning all about the many different scents and how each ingredient works to create such a special smell.

Richard explained how he visions each fragrance as being almost like a person, each one having a different personality; some are loud and brash, some are subtle yet seductive, and others are sweet and sophisticated. It was unbelievably fascinating watching and listening to Richard as he captured my full attention and thoughts and captivated into his world of Penhaligon’s, describing each exquisite fragrance in great detail.

As we smelt each fragrance I was instantly dragged into a passed era, one minute we were in the roaring 1920’s at a fabulous party sipping on cocktails and dancing the night away, and then as Richard passes me over another fragrance strip to smell he takes me to a Yorkshire meadow with the dew on the grass blades and the birds singing. It was a magnificent contrast between fragrances and made me realize what it is I like from a fragrance.

From the freshness of Gardenia to the sweetness of Ellenisia, my senses were bombarded with quite literally a party of powerful scents, and it was amazing how strongly I reacted to each individual scent. There were some I couldn’t get enough of and others were too strong for my senses and reminded me of very particular memories.  However there was one fragrance in particular that I completely and utterly fell in love with, Cornubia. This fragrance oozes with pure glamour; with base notes of vanilla, musk, wood and amber my skin embraced and warmed it creating the most heavenly and seductive smell. I can tell this will be my signature fragrance from now on, and I won’t be able to look at it without being instantly reminded of my special fragrance profiling creating quite literally, liquid emotions.

Jessica writes her own beauty blog The Beauty Room. You can read more from her blog here.

The unveiling of Wish Magazine!

Last month Emily and I attended the launch party of Wish Magazine. Created by two lovely bloggers, Carrie of wishwishwish and Lucy of Shiny Thoughts, the 86 page magazine can be described as a children’s book for adults, featuring talented illustrators, photographers, writers and designers. Penhaligon’s is delighted to be sponsoring the first edition of the magazine.

The launch party was held in The Victoria in Mornington Crescent. Reminiscent of an old fashioned tea room, the venue was filled with beautiful bouquets of flowers and Penhaligon’s candles. Guests were treated to yummy culinary delights (the cheese stars were a particular favourite of mine) and bespoke Wish cocktails created exclusively by Hendricks.

Throughout the afternoon guests were able to knit their own bows and have their portraits drawn by illustrators. We also offered our  fragrance profile service to help numerous guests find their favourite scent. Ellenisia and Gardenia seemed to be the most popular choices!

Wish Magazine is available to buy now. Check it out for yourself here.

The Grooming Guide: Why and How to Wear Fragrance

On a recent fragrance profile at our Burlington Arcade boutique,  Editor of The Grooming Guide, Nick Cox discovered the best means to wear fragrance. Here he reveals some of the top tips he learnt that day!

Just as wild animals mark their territory, a gentleman must choose fragrance to extend the personal space he inhabits. Men who used to experiment with scent were said to be of
‘questionable’ character, now if you make little effort to smell sweet you are
in the minority.

Be in charge of your fragrance and know that it should never dominate you. For whilst it may be appealing to leave a subtle scent, a gentleman is seldom smelt before entering a room!

Do your research and choose a fragrance that fits well with your bodies natural pheromones, that way the unique fragrance you create will be alluring. It will never work quite as well on anyone else! Think of this fragrance as the ultimate accessory, a finishing
flourish like your cufflinks or tie pin.

It’s time to replace the splash and dash routine of our youth with The Grooming Guide’s more considered approach to wearing fragrance. To spray or squirt, and where and when? Here are our do’s and dont’s to being well scented………

DON’T apply fragrances to the face particularly Eau de Toilettes as their high oil content will cause irritation.

DO apply in the right areas. Get to know your hotspots! These are your pulse points, wrists, neck etc and are the places where our blood flows closer to the surface, it’s  warmth will unlock the power of your fragrance.

DON’T ever apply a fragrance directly onto your clothing,  it will not develop
properly and you may also risk damaging your favourite shirt, tie, jumper etc.

DO layer up. If you have a favourite fragrance that works for you invest in multiple products from the same range (shave foam, balm, deodorant, fragrance etc.) This will prevent you from wearing a heady cocktail of competing smells, after all we all know that most body products can be over fragranced.

DON’T overload yourself. Your nose will quickly adapt to your chosen fragrance making it smell less potent, so be aware of this. Also be wary of the words ‘intense’ and ‘concentrate’ when connected with a fragrance and approach these with caution.

DO spray onto a freshly bathed (and dried) body. Just a few squirts on a warm chest will let a scent open up and work its magic.
