Stuffing our faces with perfume at LFW!

Can anyone believe London Fashion Week is already over? Not only did Penhaligon’s scent Meadham Kirchhoff’s 2012 A/W collection for the sixth season running, but for the first time ever, guests on the front row experienced the show via their taste buds too. Their taste buds I hear you say? That’s right, in a twist on the notion of scent we and Meadham Kirchhoff worked with Edinburgh based chocolatier, The Chocolate Tree to create an exclusive confection, inspired by one of our fragrances, Eau Sans Pareil. The scent, a shimmering chypre, was chosen specifically by Ben and Edward to reflect their 70s inspired collection.

The Meadham Kirchhoff catwalk resembled a psychedelic nightclub complete with dazzling lights and a flashing dance floor. Models walked (and danced) down the runway in an array of vibrant sequins, glitter, faux fur and silk.

We’ve already started counting down the days until LFW returns this September….who knows what surprises Ben and Edward will have in store for us next time!

You can check out the rest of the photos from the show on our Facebook page here.

The Fashion Files Part Six by guest blogger Abi Marvel

As Fashion Week finishes in London and descends upon Milan, guest blogger Abi describes which scent personifies her  - the smoky and sensual Malabah.

A little bit about you & what you do? I’m a blogger, but I also write for numerous publications and brands as well. Of course that’s not forgetting all the social media channels and the various photographs I take to feature in my work.  All in all I tend to have a lot of fun whilst doing it all!

What excites you most about working in fashion? A mix between being able to see some of the most beautiful clothes in the world to meeting some of best coolest creative minds out there!

What can’t you leave the house without? My phone, camera & travel card!

What sort of things do you do in your spare time? I’m pretty boring, so when I’m not working ( which I don’t actually consider as work) I’m probably doing various university projects.

Favourite shop? I want to say ASOS but I only really get a few pieces from there each season, so probably Urban Outfitters.

Currently listening to.. Lost are Found by Hillsong

What’s fashion week like for you? Fashion Week is a fun but beyond busy time for me; my deadlines become hourly, the catwalk locations become further apart and food is a good old friend which I don’t see at all… But with all that, it is arguably one of the best times of the year. I know people say fashion isn’t as glamorous as it sounds,
but I think at times, they forget about the pretty darn incredible times!

Why Malabah? Besides the obvious that ‘it smells overwhelmingly’ great, Malabah is all about an imaginary journey along an East Indian spice route. It’s not a journey that I’ve ever taken but I believe nonetheless that the scent personifies me because as the sweet musks and amber change, they represent everything I am going through and the twists and turns of life.

So there we have it! London Fashion Week is over and I really hope you have enjoyed my  series ‘The Fashion Files.’

We’d like to thank Abi for writing these fantastic posts to coincide with Fashion Week. Please do check out her blog I Am AbiMarvel here.

Which scent do you think personifies you?

The Fashion Files Part Five by guest blogger Abi Marvel

As the final day of womenswear at LFW draws close, guest blogger Abi describes the scent of choice for the artistic and talented fashion designer – Eau Sans Pareil.

A little bit about you & what you do? We create clothes
that we love, quite simply.

What excites you the most about being a designer? Creating collections that you can look back on and feel proud about. We’re not overly fussed about critics & fashion editors – we just want to show the world our clothes and what we can do.

What can’t you leave the house without? Nothing, to be honest.

What sort of things do you do in your spare time? When not working, we love to go to roller-disco’s or ice skating. Random we know, but it’s crazy fun.

Favourite shop? Beyond Retro, and of course Browns too!

Currently listening to.. I’m Just a Girl by No Doubt

What’s fashion week like for you? Besides the obvious, business,  fashion week is certainly a defining time in our careers. In the build up to a show the air is always so thick with curiosity & expectations but we try and ‘embrace it’ as it’s hard to avoid.

Why Eau Sans Pareil? The world of fashion is unpredictable and we have to keep things moving at a fast pace, setting new trends before the consumer can predict what they are. Eau Sans Pareil reflects this element of fashion as it gives you a giddy rush of fruits and forests, which similar to romanticism, makes you want more.

The Fashion Files Part Four by guest blogger Abi Marvel

Part Four of The Fashion Files and guest blogger Abi describes which fragrance
personifies the fashion editor – the bold and daring Bluebell.

A little bit about you & what you do? During fashion week, I watch shows, go to
presentations, meet designers, it’s all rather busy but very style focused. Of
course there are the mountains of parties and dinners to attend as well!

What excites you the most about working as an editor? Gaining an insight into what’s new for each season. I love getting to define/make trends that our readers can then interpret and have fun with!

What can’t you leave the house without? The schedule my assistant created. Without it, I just wouldn’t know what was going on.

What sort of things do you do in your spare time? I love to go skiing in the French Alps or spend time with my family in the country.

Favourite shop? Browns, Net-A-Porter & Colette.

Currently listening to..I Need by Maverick Sabre & Countdown by Beyonce.

What’s fashion week like for you? It’s more like fashion month. I have New York then London then Milan then Paris. It’s intense and long and busy, but it’s what I live for.

Why Bluebell? Bluebell is my fragrance of choice because it has a great mix of sugar and spice. I keep things fun but I’m serious when it comes down to work and I always deliver. I am constantly searching for something new and unique – this scent reflects that.

The Fashion Files Part Three by guest blogger Abi Marvel

Day three of London Fashion Week and guest blogger Abi continues to describe which fragrance embodies the PR girl – the floral and fruity Artemisia.

A little bit about you & what you do? I essentially help develop and promote a brands image. I keep things cool & creative at all times and mostly just work – a lot.

What excites you the most about being working in PR? I suppose it’s the tangible things…the new collection one of our clients produce for example.  Seeing it all come together & knowing the journey they’ve been through, makes working with them so worth it.

What can’t you leave the house without? My blackberry, obviously.

What sort of things do you do in your spare time? My job doesn’t really leave me with any ‘spare time’, but when I’m not in the office/showroom you can find me in Sketch.

Favourite shop? Outnet.com, online counts right?

Currently listening to.. Off to the races by Lana Del Rey

What’s fashion week like for you? It’s probably one of the busiest times of the year, crazy hours, a lot of phone calls and organization is integral. The list really does go on and it’s one of those things that when I look back over, I think that was stressful! But on the other hand it’s also some of the best days of my life..

So why am I Artemisia? It’s all about leaving an impression. Artemisia does just that with a combination of caramel, and powdery violet elements. There’s a haunting subtlety that  encapsulates all that I do, working in PR. Of course it has warm spices and lily petals, which is super reflective of me because, it’s all about being friendly, approachable but strong.

The Fashion Files Part Two by guest blogger Abi Marvel

In the second part of her London Fashion Week series, guest blogger Abi Marvel reveals which LFW character is enamoured with our pretty floral Ellenisia – the Make Up Artist!

What’s the most exciting part of your job? I suppose you could say I enhance peoples beauty…I can work magic! It’s just as creative as being a painter really, but my palette tends to be peoples faces.

What can’t you leave the house without? My iPod & make-up kit.

What sort of things do you do in your spare time? I spend most of my time watching tv whilst sketching/colouring new possiblelooks, that’s what my ‘down time’ looks like.

Favourite shop? MAC Cosmetics in Covent Garden!

Currently listening to? Make Me Proud by Drake (feat. Nicki Minaj)

What’s fashion week like for you? It’s incredibly exciting as I get to really experiment with the make-up! It’s a real adrenaline rush, as we have just a few minutes to try and achieve perfection.

Why Ellenisia? I love colour, working with  different, vibrant shades on a daily basis.  Ellenisia is probably one of the most visual fragrances, filled with sweet plum & creamy vanilla. Both elements I find creates such clear images in your mind and is therefore the perfect fragrance to express my love for all things magical.

The Fashion Files Part One by guest blogger Abi Marvel

Today is the first day of London Fashion Week and our fair city has turned into one giant catwalk! Blogger Abisola from I am Abimarvel has come up with a great idea; matching our scents to some of the colourful LFW characters. First up, the Fashion Blogger who personifies Juniper Sling!

Why did you become a blogger? I suppose the creative side of things; like being sent a cool, exclusive bag & having fun photographing it. I like the randomness.

What can’t you leave the house without? Probably my camera, just cause I’m constantly snapping away..

Favourite shop Couverture & The Garbstore, it’s beyond cool, I can’t even explain!

Currently listening to Hot Right Now by DJ Fresh & Rita Ora

What’s fashion week like for you It’s such a great time for London talent and I feel lucky to have this first hand insight to it all. I get to meet up with my blogger friends, who have basically become my family whilst seeing the collections of designers I love, it’s a pretty surreal week.

Why Juniper Sling? When it comes to this fragrance it’s all about the playful but chilled elements and that’s what fashion bloggers are all about. We have fun with the clothes but we don’t take ourselves to seriously because we don’t want to lose the love for all things sartorial! That’s what Juniper Sling is all about, being young and having fun.

Love Potions by guest bloggers Mademoiselle and Monsieur Robot

With Valentine’s Day looming ever closer the fantastic Mademoiselle Robot and Monsieur Robot have kindly agreed to share their love potions of choice with us.

Mademoiselle Robot

I’ve been through several different perfumes in my life… and,
well… I’ve been through several men too. Don’t judge me, I am 33 and I am
French. It is in my DNA: I love perfume and I love men. I am not sure about
perfumed men. Actually I do like them as well, as long as they don’t smell like
a teenage locker room. One of my first really serious crushes as an adult still
is engraved in my memory because of the perfume he used to wear. Guerlain’s
Vetiver. I love the scent of Vetiver, it is like catnip for me. So you can
imagine the effect this guy had on me… Within a minute of smelling him, I had
decided he’d be the father of my children (he isn’t) and the man of my dreams
(definitely isn’t).

Fast forward a few years and I met a man who really is the man of my
dreams and really is the father of my child. When I met him it was instant
fireworks. We got on swimmingly, it was like we had known each other forever -
pardon the clichés. One issue presented itself: he used to wear Lynx deodorant.
As I said earlier, there really is one thing I can’t handle and it is the smell
of a teenage locker room. As soon as we moved in together, I decided to educate
him a little about scents. Pregnancy was a great excuse to make him ditch the
Lynx (you don’t say “no” to a pregnant lady dealing with morning sickness) and
take on a much more refined scent: Eau Sauvage. There is a little bit of
Vetiver in there and it is a classic cologne worn by classy men like Cary Grant
and my grandfather.

After a few blissful years swimming in this Eau Sauvage, I met
Juniper Sling and thought it was time for my beloved husband to shake things up
a little bit. Juniper Sling also has Vetiver in it, so it is also like catnip
to me but it is more unique than all his previous scents. I love coming home
and smelling it on his discarded jumper or having a shower after he’s gone in
the morning when the bathroom still smells of him – or of Juniper Sling.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Monsieur Robot

Valentine’s Day is dismissed by some as a crude capitalist invention to wring money out of
guilty husbands and boyfriends. There are millions spent on cards, flowers and
ill-thought out lingerie purchases, but to us romantics it’s a wicked
opportunity to remind your other half of how much you love them. Fragrances
probably sell more at Christmas time, but the gift of scent seems a bit more
personal to me, ideal for Valentines. Fragrances are key to attraction, so
smelling good is in everyone’s best interests. Most couples have a ‘song’, a
tune that reminds them of when they met, it might even get played at their
wedding. But if you ask, they’ll probably also have ‘scents’ too; a perfume or
aftershave that was worn during the early days of the relationship. These
fragrances will hold a special ability to rekindle all the emotions, joys and
memories of that time in one simple whiff.

For me there is one special fragrance, the release of which just happened to
coincide with me meeting a certain someone. I think of this coincidence almost like the planets aligning (I did say I was a romantic, didn’t I?). The fragrance I’m talking about is Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. A fragrance whose bottle can barely contain the scent within, a sexy, ribbed, black decanter with a splash of gold, it was pure Tom Ford. I ran to
the store to buy it. The lady at the counter assured me it was a unisex fragrance
but when I smelt the woody base notes, the vanilla and blackcurrant I honestly
didn’t care who it was meant for, I wanted it. In fact if the raunchy ad
campaign didn’t make it explicit enough this is the smell of sex, Tom Ford
style. I don’t think it should be called unisex, so seductive is its charm I’d
say it was more bisexual.

The big night came, the first date after a very long drawn out courtship. Drunk on
the glamour of Tom’s new scent I decided to go overboard. About £30 worth of
Black Orchid body cream was liberally applied (all over), as well as this I
sprayed as much of the fragrance on myself as I could, without making my
clothes look wet. The night went well and a few days later I received a text
“What was the fragrance you were wearing the other night?” I panicked, had I
overdone it? Did he hate it? I told him what it was but received no reply…

A few dates down the line he made a confession – he’d asked about the fragrance
because he’d become infatuated with the smell, (and dare I say with me?) I’d
left one whole side of the sofa smelling of Black Orchid and he was rushing
home for work to inhale the smell that reminded him of me. I’d got my man,
albeit with a little help from Tom. Nowadays one whiff of Black Orchid reminds
us both of the early days and the infatuation we had with each other then. The
fragrance is a precious thing to me, and I don’t use it so much anymore, unless
it’s a special occasion, anniversaries and Valentines Day of course. It’s how
Tom would want it.

Olivier Cresp and the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Penhaligon’s was delighted to hear that Olivier Cresp, master perfumer of Juniper Sling, received the highly regarded Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Paris last month. The recognition is awarded to those who have made a ‘significant contribution to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance.’ The ceremony was presided over by Frédéric Mitterrand, the French Minister of Culture and Communication, in the stunning Palais-Royal and honoured four other talented perfumers as well; Daniela Andrier (Prada, Candy), Olivier’s sister Francoise Caron (Hermes, L’Eau d’Orange Verte), Dominique Ropio (Paco Rabanne, Lady Million) and Maurice Roucel (Gucci, Envy).

Nathalie Vinciguerra, our Head of Fragrance Development, was lucky enough to attend the prestigious event as a guest of Olivier and was greatly moved by how touching the ceremony was.

Olivier has created numerous fragrances for a variety of brands including Dolce & Gabanna, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Nina Ricci.  Born in Grasse in 1955 to a family heavily involved in the world of fragrance (both his grandfather and father bought and sold raw materials), Olivier always dreamt of becoming a perfumer – even by the young age of 7 he had already started to mix essences at home! In the 1970’s Olivier left Grasse for America to study raw materials and it was here that he learnt about food aromas and chromatology, which would go on to greatly influence the signature gourmand notes for which he is so renowned. When Olivier left America and returned to France he joined De Laire and Quest before moving to Firmenich in 1992, for whom he remains working for today. It was in this year that Olivier was awarded the esteemed title of master perfumer and created one of his most famous fragrances, Angel by Thierry Mugler, which is described by Frédéric Mitterrand himself as a ‘blockbuster of a fragrance.’ It was the first modern gourmand scent ever created, and is characterised by notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla and patchouli; for those of you who have smelt Juniper Sling, you may recognise the gourmand notes of orange brandy, black cherry and brown sugar within the fragrance!

Penhaligon’s would like to congratulate Olivier on this well deserved achievement!

Which is your favourite fragrance Olivier Cresp has created?

Perfume Memories by Guest Blogger and Make Up Artist Emma Day

I am what is loosely termed, a perfume addict. As far as addictions go, I realise it could be worse and at least it means that I am always fragrant which can only be a good thing. Ever since I can remember, I have never been able to resist the lure of a delicious smell in a beautiful bottle. Being one of those annoying customers who stalks the Liberty Beauty Halls sniffing and spraying myself in various delicious aromas, very rarely buying anything; how can I justify another bottle when I already have about 50 half used old friends sitting decorously in my bedroom and bathroom. Well sometimes I do justify it in a particularly female way – I buy another bottle because it just makes me feel good. I do the same with candles.

The power and intoxication of scent must lie in its transformative effect – a good smell can instantly beguile, evoke dormant nostalgia and even when I have frizzy hair and chipped nails, cloaking myself in one of my favourites seems to turn me more into the kind of woman I want to be. Who hasn’t looked at those early Chanel No5 ads of Catherine Deneuve and dreamt of having a little bit of what she’s having? I don’t like the smell of Opium but
who doesn’t want to be as sexily hypnotic as the various faces of the brand
throughout the years?

My first memories of perfume are sitting in the back of my father’s car, with my mother in the front looking incredibly chic and drenched in Chloe, on our way to a family party. Chloe perfume in the late 70′s/80′s was very different from its present day rosy, delightfully feminine incarnation; like many popular perfumes of the day there was nothing understated about it. It was completely overpowering and wafts of it would come towards my sister and I, whilst we would bitterly complain of headaches and feign disgust. The Chloe shop at the time was underneath my dad’s gallery and the owner, a debonaire Italian, took a shine to my glamourously eccentric parents and gave my mother a couple of Chloe dresses (which she still has) and no doubt gave her a taste for the scent.

In my job as a make up artist, I have been lucky enough to work with Duran
Duran a number of times in the last year. One particular member of the band, fellow perfume addict Nick Rhodes was telling me about Jungle Gardenia, a very sexy mixture of tuberose and gardenia that “all the drag queens and top models wore”. It retailed for under ten dollars and could be bought in most drugstores in the States but was clearly a fantastic smell of two of my favourite white flowers. I can only imagine Studio 54 absolutely reeked off it (amongst other things!) I believe old bottles of the stuff now sells for a fortune on Ebay. I try and make do without possessing a bottle of this delicious sounding stuff with Penhaligon’s, Chanel Gardenia or Miller Harris’ Tuberose. Fracas is next on my list which is the classic of all tuberoses and
such a ridiculously sexy smell that it would be saved for evenings only.

My own first perfume was another 80’s classic – Paloma Picasso. My
father bought it for me after one of his many business trips as he liked it’s
associations. However, for a fourteen year old, it was far too sophisticated
and I never quite bonded with it; it was far more suited to a thirty year old
woman of the world. When a bottle of Chanel No19 appeared I was overjoyed to find a scent that was young, fresh and green and adored the chunky glass bottle with the chic screw top.

Things continued to improve when my absolute favourite Penhaligon’s Bluebell started to make its way into the house and my mother’s dressing table and bathroom (the bath oil still being a standard birthday request.) The days of Chloe had given way to something much softer. There is something about Bluebell that no other company has succeeded in making in this flower -  a smell that literally smells of a wood of fresh bluebells in the spring under azure cloudless skies. My favourite Penhaligon’s scents still continue to be the classic floral rose, gardenia and bluebell scents which suggest everything I love about the brand and what continue to make it particularly English and special. What I most love about it of course, is that it reminds me of home and memories. Thank goodness for great perfume.
